USMC YUMA + Grasslands
Regenerating Land at MCAS Yuma

At MCAS Yuma, a pioneering regenerative grazing project is restoring 300 acres of desert through strategic livestock management. In partnership with the Navy, MCAS Yuma, and the Grasslands Regeneration Project, led by Alejandro Carrillo, this initiative utilizes 93 cows, donkeys, and burros to revitalize the arid landscape.

By mimicking natural grazing patterns, these animals aerate the soil, improve water retention, and enrich the land—reviving native grasses and capturing carbon. Even in a dry climate, the results are striking: healthier ecosystems, restored soil, and a more resilient landscape.

This project demonstrates the power of regenerative practices in transforming degraded land into thriving, self-sustaining ecosystems.

Regenerative Grazing Open Air Lab (R-GOAL)

Launched in September 2024, R-GOAL is a proof-of-concept initiative implementing and assessing regenerative grazing on 2,500 acres of Department of Defense (DoD) land, with the potential to scale across 26 million acres of DoD-managed land.

Utilizing Adaptive Multi-Paddock (AMP) grazing, this project leverages variable stock densities to reduce wildfire fuel loads, revitalize training areas, improve water infiltration, and enhance warfighter proficiency. R-GOAL establishes baseline ecological and operational metrics, with ongoing assessments to demonstrate scalability and mission readiness benefits.

We are actively seeking partners and funding to expand this innovative effort. Unlocking the full potential of regenerative grazing on military installations presents an unparalleled opportunity to strengthen military readiness, restore critical ecosystems, and create long-term benefits for both training operations and surrounding communities.
